Teen Alcohol Safety Program

In July 2000 a new law went into effect that allowed police officers to give a civil ticket for 16-20 year olds who were consuming or possessing alcohol.

Court Diversion Programs were designated to establish and administer the Teen Alcohol Safety Program in each county.

The following is a overview of requirements for participants in the Chittenden County Teen Alcohol Safety Program. Each individual in the program must complete the requirements of his/her contract within ninety days.

First Ticket Contract

  • Pay $175 program fee.
  • Write a five page research paper in which you document FIVEalcohol related deaths and what you have learned from them.
  • Complete an alcohol assessment with a Certified Drug/Alcohol Counselor and follow any recommendations  (if any) made for further treatment.
  • Complete the on-line AlcoholEdu® class and achieve a grade of 80% or better to pass.

Second Ticket Contract

  • Pay $175 program fee.
  • You must write a research paper of at least 5 pages entitled "Why is the legal drinking age 21?". You must cite at least THREE different sources in your paper.
  • Complete an alcohol assessment with a Certified Drug/Alcohol Counselor and follow any recommendations  (if any) made for further treatment, the counselor must be notified this is your second alcohol violation.
  • Complete 20 hours of Community Service. The details of these hours are to be arranged with your Case Manager.

You can only participate in the Teen Alcohol Safety Program on TWO occasions!

If you are given another civil ticket we will return it to the officer instructing them to rescind the ticket and prosecute you criminally.
